Death toll reaches 87 in India''s cyclone-hit West Bengal
The death toll in the devastating cyclone that hit India's eastern state of West Bengal on Monday has reached up to 87, out of whom 16 were killed in a landslide in north Bengal.
State Chief Minister Buddadeb Bhattarcharjee reviewed the situation at a high level meeting in Kolkata. He also visited affected Nimpith area in South 24 Parganas on Tuesday, while India's Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Kadwip and Namkahna areas in the same district.
According to an All India Radio (AIR) report, State Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta visited the North 24 Parganas area to take stock of the situation.
State Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty said that relief and rescue work is going on with war-footing in the affected districts in South Bengal.
He added that IAF (Indian Air Force) helicopters made four sorties in North and South 24 Parganas districts for air-dropping food packets and water pouches.
He further stated that the state government has sanctioned USD 0.3 million from the Contingency Fund for rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has dispatched 2500 personnel of the central paramilitary forces to assist in the relief and rescue operations in cyclone hit areas of West Bengal on Tuesday.
